Let’s talk about one of the first (and biggest!) questions you’ll face when booking a beach photo session:
Do you want sunrise or sunset?
Living and photographing in Florida, we’re lucky — either one is stunning. That golden light? It hits just right whether it’s rising over the ocean or sinking below the horizon. But depending on your family’s rhythm, your vision, and even the season, one might feel better than the other. So let’s break it down…
If you’ve got early risers (hello, parents of toddlers 👋), sunrise might be your best friend.
In the summer months, the sun rises early — we’re talking 6:30 AM — but most kids are naturally up anyway. The best part? The beach is empty. There’s something magical about watching the world wake up while your family plays in the soft, golden light.
Plus, the ocean in summer is so warm and inviting — your session can easily turn into a full-on beach morning. Splashing, swimming, laughing — I’ll be there to capture all of it. You’ll head home sandy and happy, and still have the whole day ahead of you.
In the winter, sunrise is a little later (around 7 AM), so it’s not quite as intense an early wake-up. Just a heads-up: the water can be chilly this time of year — so if you’re dreaming of swimming shots, summer’s your season.
Sunsets are undeniably dreamy — that warm light, that soft breeze, that slow end-of-day energy. During summer, sessions usually start around 7:15 PM. Gorgeous? Yes. But it can be tough with little ones who are used to winding down early. If your kiddos have a strict bedtime, it’s something to think about.
Winter sunsets, though? A total win. The light starts to dip around 6:45 PM, which means you get all that golden glow and still make it home for an early bedtime. No jackets required — Florida stays kind enough in the evenings to skip the bundling, most of the time.
Here’s something to really sit with before choosing your session time:
How do you imagine these photos living in your space?
Because this isn’t just about showing up for a shoot.
It’s about making art from your life — and printing it, hanging it, filling your walls with moments that make your house feel like home.
If your style is more coastal — think light, airy, barefoot living — sunrise photos with your family in swimsuits or breezy coverups might fit your space like a dream.
If you lean more warm and cozy — earthy tones, texture, a little bit of sweater weather — then a sunset session might be just the vibe. Picture soft knits, bare feet in the sand, maybe even a cozy beach blanket wrapped around your crew.
There’s no wrong choice. Just the one that feels right for you.
Whether you’re leaning sunrise or sunset, I’d love to help you plan a session that feels natural, meaningful, and true to your family.
